Lumley Secondary School

EducAid's Lumley Secondary School - where everything started!

This is where EducAid evolved our innovative learning methodologies that are now so successfully used across the whole programme. Lumley continues to be a model school to this day impacting thousands across the country.

The School

EducAid’s Lumley was the first EducAid school. It all started with free classes given on the veranda of a private house in the aftermath of Sierra Leone's devastating civil war.

Located in a highly populated suburb of the capital Freetown, EducAid's Lumley Secondary School has been operating in its own building since 2005. The site hosts a junior and a senior secondary school, as well as EducAid’s headquarters where our Finance and Operations teams work to support all EducAid’s programmes and activities.

Last school year Lumley provided free quality education to 257 girls and boys. There were also 103 students attending EducAid’s Strong Girl Incubator (SGI), a programme aimed at supporting gender equality by helping vulnerable girls and young women to stay in school and complete secondary education.

School Activities

Lumley is EducAid’s model school in the Western Urban Area, often receiving the visit of national and international partners, and showcasing our student-centred approach resulting in academic excellence and great strides in inclusion and gender equality.

Many activities are also held across the school - including various environmental projects (beach clean ups, plastic reduction and collection, tree planting and climate change awareness), WASH projects and more!

Last year Lumley has driven several important environmental initiatives aimed at creating climate change awareness among our students and in the communities we serve.

Latest news at Lumley

Last year, the team were excited to open new ICT labs at Lumley. This means that more students have access to technology in our changing world, and we work to close the digital divide.

Lumley staff and students also worked worked on raising awareness and protecting the environment. The school banned plastic bags on site and sewing projects are now in place to repurpose old fabric and reduce plastic use. Staff and students have also planted seedlings, learnt to recycle paper and mobilised groups with the local community to pick up litter from their local environment and beaches.

Lumley also celebrated their annual sports day in March. It was a great success with both students and staff practicing a variety of sports! See some photos of the day below:
