Last week and for the next 5 weeks at our Maronka site we hosted teachers from 65 primary schools to begin the next phase of the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge (SLEIC) with a training in literacy, numeracy and strategies to improve teaching and classroom management.

It’s Trustees’ Week, a time for us to come together and celebrate our board and thank them for their amazing work.
Our trustees are the people who share ultimate responsibility for governing EducAid to ensure it works towards its charitable objectives and in line with Charity Commission guidelines. They volunteer their time to oversee the governance of EducAid, making decisions about our policies, charitable objectives and strategy. Trustees have a collective responsibility to act in EducAid’s best interest. Thank you!

At EducAid we recognise the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) as a key element of education. SEL is the process through which children acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and establish and maintain collaborative relationships. People with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially.
SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower children and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.

This year EducAid is part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge!
The Big Give runs UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, the Christmas Challenge. From 12:00/noon Tuesday 29 November to 12:00/noon Tuesday 6 December you can support EducAid by donating to our campaign on the Big Give site and your donation will be doubled! Yes! One donation, twice the impact!
The funds raised will be used to support our Junior and Senior Secondary schools at Rolal, in the Port Loko district. This school is one of the strongest in the district, winning multiple awards over the years. It is EducAid’s largest school serving over 260 students, including 214 students who call Rolal school home.

Today is World Children’s Day and the annual commemoration of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
Adopted on 20 November 1989, the CRC is the most universally accepted human rights treaty. The convention regards children as human beings and individuals with their own rights, not just as objects who belong to their parents and for whom decisions are made. It sets out the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights that all children everywhere are entitled to. Despite the adoption of the CRC, millions of children around the world continue to suffer violations of their rights when they are denied adequate health care, nutrition, education, and protection from violence.
At EducAid, we promote and advocate for the right of children to live, be safe, develop, and have a say in decisions concerning their lives. We believe that education is not only a fundamental human right but also essential for the exercise of all other human rights. Through education, children are empowered to build a future where they can make the most of their life, fight poverty, level inequalities and ensure sustainable development.

EducAid’s Strong Girl Incubator (SGI) provides girls and young women who are re-entering school with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to successfully return to mainstream education. It is an accelerated learning programme with mentoring and peer support. In addition to the academic work that begins with basic literacy and numeracy before progressing to mathematics, language and arts, participants enjoy workshops, sisterhood circles and other activities designed to create support networks, to increase self-esteem, and to build resilience. The SGI provides a safe, judgement-free space for girls to learn together, creating a built-in support network led by female role models.
In the school year 2021-22, EducAid’s SGI helped 50 girls and young women to go back to education. Out of the 50 students enrolled, 48 successfully transitioned to mainstream secondary school. Also, an additional 40 schoolgirls from our mainstream secondary schools were able to attend SGI classes for short periods of time as a remedial programme to strengthen their foundational skills
Interviews with students and teachers showed that the programme has a remarkable impact on positive social behavioural change. After a few weeks of participation, most girls and young women displayed increased self-awareness and improved relational and communication skills. These soft skills are important as they contribute to the development of healthy social behaviours necessary to actively participate in society.
EducAid’s commitment is to maintain the high quality of delivery of the SGI while increasing the number of girls and young women who can benefit from it. We strongly believe that by improving gender equality the SGI can contribute significantly to reducing poverty in Sierra Leone.

The SGI also served as a remedial programme for 40 schoolgirls to strengthen their foundational skills and support their learning in secondary school.

It’s the second day of the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2022!
This year we are raising funds to support our Junior and Secondary schools in Rolal, Port Loko district.
Some facts about EducAid Rolal:
-In 2022 Rolal scored some of the highest secondary school exam results in Sierra Leone – top ten for WASSCE.
-In 2021, Rolal was chosen as one of 120 schools around the world to be showcased as part of World Education Week.
-In November, Rolal hosted an English Fair, where 17 teachers and 146 students from various secondary schools in Port Loko gathered to share fun ways to learn and teach English.
-Rolal has regularly been featured in the Guardian and BBC for their efforts through the pandemic and recently for keeping pregnant students learning.
-Rolal students were chosen as one of two teams to represent Sierra Leone in Plan International’s Education Uninterrupted Incubator. They will create video content and become ambassadors of STEM education.
-Rolal’s Leadership Team trained in a PDIA approach (Problem-Derived Iterative Adaptation) developed at Harvard University and has been working with local education leaders to develop a District Education Sector plan for Port Loko.
-Rolal organised and hosted the first Rolal reunion for alumni at the end of 2021

From 29 November to 6 December EducAid participated in The Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, with the ambitious goal of raising £6,000 from online donations. These donations would be matched to raise a total of £12,000.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to reach our goal in less than 24 hours! After that, our campaign received more donations every day, for a total of £13,410 raised in only one week.
All of these funds will be used for EducAid’s Junior and Senior Secondary schools at Rolal, in the Port Loko district of Sierra Leone. In these schools, we provide free, high-quality education to more than 260 students. In Rolal, EducAid also provides support to vulnerable girls and young women to re-enter and stay in secondary education through the Strong Girl Incubator.

It’s time for EducAid’s Book Club! Today we talk about “Desmond and the Very Mean Word”, by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Douglas Carlton Abrams.

A huge thanks to all EducAid’s friends and supporters for a great 2022. It was a busy year full of challenges and hard work. Thank you all for contributing to some important achievements of 2022:
- EducAid Rolal placed in the top ten schools in Sierra Leone for WASSCE and highest performing school in the northwest region.
- Our students obtained a 100% pass rate at the NPSE (national pass rate 81.2%).
- Our Strong Girl Incubator helped 50 girls and young women to go back to education, of which 48 successfully transitioned to mainstream secondary school. The programme will welcome 95 students for the school year 2022-23.
- After successfully completing the 3-years Education Innovation Challenge, EducAid is now a partner of the MBSSE in the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge (SLEIC) with the Education Outcomes Fund. EducAid is working with 65 schools (serving more than 20,000 students) and training more than 500 teachers in literacy, numeracy and classroom management.
- EducAid’s degree course in Business Administration & Management (BAM) with the University of Makeni had 8 more graduates.
- In October, EducAid premiered its girl power song “We Are Like Diamonds” written, played and produced by musician and educator Steve Revington with award-winning community leader and entertainer Saidat on lead vocals.
- EducAid participated for the first time in the Big Give Christmas Challenge reaching our target of £12,000 in less than 24 hours and finally raising £13,410 to support our schools in Rolal.
- EducAid’s work was featured in the Guardian, BBC, and the Economist.
