Today the U.K. celebrates World Book Day; so this is the perfect day for the latest title in EducAid’s book club!

“Sing to the Moon” by Nansubuga Nagadya Isdahl is a touching story of a grandfather’s love for his grandson and the quiet pleasures of a rainy day.

For one little Ugandan boy, no wish is too big. First he dreams of reaching the stars and then of riding a supernova straight to Mars, but on a rainy day at his grandfather’s house, he is brought down to earth with a bump. Do adventures only happen in galaxies far away or can he find magic a little closer to home?

World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is an opportunity to celebrate engineering and the contribution of engineers for a better, sustainable world.

At EducAid we engage our students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and introduce them to material to stimulate their interest in science and to help them understand their educational and career options in those fields.

Last month at EducAid Lumley we received the visit of Mr. Walid Bahsoon, Managing Director of Premier Enviro Solutions Ltd. Mr. Bahsoon talked about how his company is reusing plastic to make building materials (bricks, tiles and roofing tiles) and showed the various types of products. Our students were able to ask questions and understand more about the negative impact that plastic pollution has on the environment.

We’ve now launched a new green initiative. Our students will be collecting reusable plastic around our  schools which will then be sold to Premier Enviro Solutions Ltd. The proceeds will be used to fund EducAid’s sports day. Every problem has a solution, stand for green revolution!

It’s International Women’s Day!

This year, International Women’s Day is centred on the theme of #EmbraceEquity.

Do you know what equity means?

The term refers to fairness and justice. It is different from equality because equality means providing the same to all, while equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. Gender equity is the process of being fair to women and men. To ensure fairness, strategies and measures must often be available to compensate for women’s historical and social disadvantages. Equity leads to equality. Gender equity leads to gender equality.

In 2023, Sierra Leone is still one of the hardest places in the world to be a girl, yet we are working on changing that. EducAid has several programmes working on improving gender equality – The Strong Girl Incubator (SGI), Girl Power Groups and White Ribbon Campaigns, Every Voice Counts. Find out more on our website https://www.educaid.org.uk/gender-equality

Touching is an important part of a child’s life. Small children touch to get to know the world. Hugs can express love and security; they can make a child feel cared for. However, touching can also mean hitting or inappropriate touching of a child’s body that can make the child feel uncomfortable, afraid, or nervous.

At EducAid, we teach children and young people about Good Touch and Bad Touch. Good touches are those that are not abusive, such as hugs from family, a pat on the back, or shaking hands. Bad touches are those that are abusive and involve touching one’s private body parts. We teach children the anatomical names of body parts to equip them with the vocabulary to communicate about their body. We also discuss body privacy and how everyone can decide who can or cannot touch their body. We encourage open communication and talk to our students about what to do if they are in an uncomfortable situation.

In February the EducAid’s Alumni Network (EAN) hosted a conference to celebrate achievements and make plans for the future. The conference was an opportunity to strengthen the relationships among members, identify goals and discuss strategies to achieve them.

Among its activities, EAN supports current EducAid students by providing mentoring, counselling, and financial sponsorships. EAN also supports its members providing career guidance and facilitating access to job opportunities. Future objectives align towards building a more sustainable EAN that can uphold its commitments and further expand the scope of its interventions. To achieve this, EAN will be working on a strategic fundraising plan and on ensuring its leadership is equitable and inclusive.

EducAid is a partner of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education in the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge (SLEIC). Among the 500 primary school teachers we are training, there are over 70 teachers who work also with preschool-aged children. For this reason, we include in our training some elements of preschool pedagogy and teaching approaches, because our commitment is to make the difference at every level and for every child.

It’s International Day of Happiness, let’s celebrate the importance of happiness within our life!

What makes you happy?

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws” laws in 1960. These laws were an internal passport system designed by the South African government to prevent the freedom of movement of Black people.

Whilst it is important to recognise the amazing work that has been done over the years to combat racism, we cannot ignore that too many people around the world are still racially abused every day. At EducAid, we believe that it is important to teach our students, with the help of international days such as this, how to fight against racial discrimination, and any type of discrimination, to create a more just society.

In February Sierra Leone organised the first ever Foundational Learning Exchange in Freetown, attended by Ministers of Education from Ivory Coast, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria Malawi and Rwanda. Participants shared their experiences, challenges, and ambitions on the path to transforming education and making learning a reality for all children.

Foundational learning refers to basic literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills that are building blocks for a life of learning. Children with poor foundational learning skills will struggle to learn anything else in school, they are more likely to repeat a grade and more likely to drop out of school. At a national level, this will lead to worse health outcomes, greater youth unemployment and deeper levels of poverty.

At EducAid, we know that foundational learning is the basis for a future of opportunities. We work to ensure that our primary school pupils acquire the literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills they need to build their future and fight poverty. We support our students in junior and secondary school to strengthen their foundational skills to make sure they do not miss out on lifelong learning opportunities. With the Strong Girl Incubator (SGI), we help girls and young women to work on their foundational skills and go back to secondary education.
